Names of God
Throughout the Bible, God reveals Himself to His people through different names. Each name highlights a different aspect of His character, nature, and relationship with us. Knowing who God is helps us trust that He will act in accordance with His character in our different circumstances.
Below is a list of some of the most significant names of God found in Scripture, along with their meanings and Bible references. You may find it meaningful to spend time each day meditating on one of these names for God, asking Him to reveal more of His nature and character to you in your current situation.
1. Adonai - Lord, Master
Genesis 15:2
But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?
Isaiah 40:10
See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.
2. Elohim - God, Mighty Creator
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Psalm 8:1
O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
3. El Elyon - The Most High God
Genesis 14:18–20
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.
Psalm 78:35
Then they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.
4. El Olam - The Everlasting God
Genesis 21:33
Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
Isaiah 26:4
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
5. El Shaddai - God Almighty
Genesis 17:1
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.
6. El Roi - The God Who Sees Me
Genesis 16:13
She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
7. Yahweh (Jehovah) - I AM WHO I AM
Exodus 3:14–15
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.”
8. Jehovah Jireh - The LORD Who Provides
Genesis 22:14
And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
9. Jehovah Mekoddishkem: The Lord who Sanctifies you
Exodus 31:13
Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: “Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.”
10. Jehovah Nissi - The LORD Is My Banner
Exodus 17:15-16
And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; for he said, “Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
11. Jehovah Rapha - The LORD Who Heals
Exodus 15:26
And said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
12. Jehovah Rohi - The LORD Is My Shepherd
Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
13. Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts
1 Samuel 1:11
Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”
14. Jehovah Shalom - The LORD Is Peace
Judges 6:24
So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
15. Jehovah Shammah - The LORD Is There
Ezekiel 48:35
All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
16. Jehovah Tsidkenu - The LORD Our Righteousness
Jeremiah 23:6
In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
